What is Dyslexia?

THERE are many misconceptions around dyslexia, including that it just affects an individual’s ability to read and write.

There are many characteristics, which an assessment can help to uncover – including to highlight a learner’s strengths and problem-solving strategies.

Does your child struggle with any of these issues?

Writing: 

A poor standard of written work compared with their verbal ability.

Messy or disorganised work.

Letter Confusion: 

Poor handwriting with possible letter reversal and trouble forming letters.

Spelling a word several different ways in one piece of work.

Poor pencil grip.

Spelling of words may be unpredictable or not age appropriate.

Issues with sequencing words or letters, including the alphabet.

Reading: 

Slower progress in reading compared to peers.

Difficulty blending letters and sounds.

Difficulty understanding the text they have just written.

Recognising and dividing words into syllables.

Maths: 

Difficulty learning sequences and symbols, including times tables.

Struggles with sequences of information such as days, months.

Organsiation, skills and time

Difficulty telling the time.

Poor time organisation and time-keeping.

Difficulty remembering a sequence of instructions at home or school.

Poor motor skills.

Left/right, up/down, east/west  confusion.

Behaviour: 

Appearing disinterested, disengaged, day-dreaming.

Tiredness from excessive concentration on small tasks.

Easily distracted or choosing to avoid work for another task.
